There are many ways to find the center of round stock. One method to find the center of a circle, using very simple techniques uses a ruler, a pencil and some way of measuring right angles and is available at the web site Instructable.

There are simple tools to find the center.

There are tools in the lab like the center square (shown below). Use any of the methods to find the center.

Measuring the center of a bar using the center square:   The ruler is assembled through the center of the center square, the two cast iron legs of the center square are then placed against the outside of the bar stock allowing a center line to be scribed alongside the ruler. Perform this action at two locations and the intersecting lines will approximate the center of the bar stock.

Drill Tip:
A quick-and-dirty technique for centering a drill over a rod is to insert an end mill into the chuck that has the same diameter as the work piece rod. Line up the edges, remove the end mill, and then insert the actual drill.
